Earlobe Repair
Earlobe Repair
Torn earlobes often happen when an earring is accidentally pulled, caught on clothing, or snagged on other objects. Even minor tugs can cause a partial or full tear, especially if the skin is thin or has been pierced multiple times. Over time, a torn earlobe can become more noticeable and make wearing earrings uncomfortable. Repairing the tear restores both the appearance and function of the lobe, allowing earrings to be worn again confidently.
Common Conditions Requiring Earlobe Repair
Elongated Earlobes: Typically develop with age as the skin loses elasticity and the lobes gradually stretch. Wearing heavy earrings over the years can worsen this, enlarging the earring hole and creating a droopy appearance. Earlobe repair for elongation helps restore a firmer, more youthful shape, tightening the tissue and improving the overall balance and symmetry of the ears.
Gauged Ears: Involve gradually stretching the earlobes with plugs or tunnels to achieve larger openings. While popular as a fashion trend, the lobes often do not fully shrink back when the individual wants a more natural look, leaving a wide hole. Earlobe repair after gauging reconstructs the lobe, closes the stretched opening, and restores a smooth, natural shape, making it possible to wear regular earrings again.
Treatment Options
Torn Earlobes: Repaired with a minor surgical procedure under local anesthesia. The tear is cleaned, aligned, and sutured, allowing the earlobe to heal smoothly. Recovery is usually quick, with sutures removed in one to two weeks.
Elongated Earlobes: Treated by reshaping and tightening the lobe, often removing excess tissue and suturing the remaining skin. Local anesthesia is used, and downtime is minimal. The procedure restores a youthful, proportionate appearance.
Gauged Earlobes: Repaired through reconstructive surgery to close the enlarged hole and restore a natural lobe shape. Tissue is adjusted and sutured, typically under local anesthesia, with a short recovery period. Healed lobes can accommodate standard earrings.
Earlobe Reduction Surgery
This procedure treats sagging and stretched earlobes and rejuvenates aging earlobes. This surgery involves reshaping and resizing the earlobe by cutting a wedge out of the lobe at the crease between the lobe and the cheek. The reduced earlobe is then sewn back for a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. Earlobe reduction surgery is designed to treat sagging or stretched earlobes and rejuvenate the appearance of aging lobes. The procedure reshapes and resizes the earlobe by removing a small wedge of tissue, typically at the crease where the lobe meets the cheek. The remaining tissue is then carefully sutured to create a natural, proportionate, and aesthetically pleasing earlobe.
What to Expect During Earlobe Repair
The earlobe is injected with anesthesia to numb the area resulting in minimal to no downtime. After surgery, you drive yourself home. Home care instructions will be provided. Discomfort can be treated with over the counter pain medication. Keeping the wound clean and following the instructions will ensure optimal healing. You may go about your normal activities, however, do not swim in the ocean, lake, river, or public pool until your dermatologist says it is safe to do so. You can shower and shampoo normally. Stitches are removed about a week after surgery.
If your surgery involves removal of the ear piercing, after you fully heal, in about six months, you can have your ear(s) re-pierced. Following these precautions and care instructions will help ensure optimal results and a smooth, natural-looking earlobe.
