Botox
What is BOTOX®?
Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. BOTOX® is the brand name of a toxin produced by Allergan. The FDA approved the use of botulinum toxin in the late 1980s when it was discovered that it could stop ailments such as blepharospasm (uncontrolled blinking) and strabismus (lazy eye). Cosmetic dermatologists have been using BOTOX® for years to treat wrinkles and facial lines successfully. BOTOX® is approved for treating frown lines on the forehead, crow’s feet (lines around the eye), and axillary hyperhidrosis (increased armpits sweating).
BOTOX® works by temporarily blocking the signal between the nerve and the muscle. The muscle can no longer contract, thus relaxing and softening the overlying wrinkles. Studies show that when BOTOX® treatment is done regularly and the muscles learn not to contract. Moreover, regular BOTOX® treatments can prevent more severe lines from developing before permanent wrinkles form.
BOTOX® is proven to improve dynamic wrinkles and creases. Within 1-2 weeks of injection, improvements become apparent and continue to improve for up to a month. However, the success of your BOTOX® treatment depends upon the skills and expertise of the injector. Bliss Dermatology was founded and is led by board-certified cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Michelle Pennie.
