March Employee Spotlight: Becky
Our Employee Spotlight series shows off our wonderful staff and takes you along to learn more about the stories and backgrounds of our team members at Bliss Dermatology + Wellness. This month, we’re excited to shine the spotlight on our Chief Operations Officer, Becky Zook.
Tell us about yourself! How did you get into dermatology?
I was working for a health plan in Pennsylvania and was ready for the next step in my RN career. I was contacted by a recruiter and introduced to a dermatologist in Fort Myers, FL. Subsequently I moved to FL for a VP position with another dermatology group. I worked there for 6 years and then found myself available again after my previous employer merged and formed a large private equity backed group. I was introduced to Dr. Pennie through a mutual colleague and joined her to build Bliss Dermatology + Wellness into the practice it is today!
Why are you passionate about dermatology?
Dermatology involves helping and healing patients from conditions that affect their quality of life, like psoriasis or skin cancer for example. Watching our patients leave feeling better, looking better, and living well here in Florida make me so happy! This is why I went to nursing school….happier, healthier patients!
What motivates you to come in and do your best every day?
I love being a leader and helping others reach their best potential….as COO of Bliss Dermatology + Wellness I get this opportunity every day! From supporting the providers and clinical teams, to our front office and call center teams, to managing the operations of the practice encompass my daily activities. When our patients succeed, our teams succeed…and their success motivates me to be my best for them.
Which of our core values resonate the most with you?
Own It, and Act Humbly Grateful. When mistakes are made, we make it safe for anyone to admit they made an error. We don’t seek to blame folks, instead we work on a root cause analysis and help fix the problems without judgement. When we Own It and speak up, we all become better at our work. Acting Humbly Grateful means we don’t take ourselves too seriously and are grateful for those around us. I am so grateful for our teams at Bliss Dermatology + Wellness as they help me do my job, heal our patients, and make our community a better place to live.
What advice do you have for someone considering a career in the medical field?
Go for it!! Dermatology isn’t just cosmetics, rashes, and skin care, it’s a whole host of conditions caused by underlying medical conditions, requiring excellent diagnostic skills. It’s like putting together a puzzle without knowing what the end result is supposed to look like! Our providers are amazing diagnosticians.
What is your #1 skin care tip?
Be gentle and wear sunscreen! Your skin is more fragile than you realize. We take care of our bodies and minds and often forget our largest organ, our skin. Our skin is the barrier to outside agents that can cause harm to our health…keeping your skin healthy keeps you healthy!
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I love to write! I write medical documents, educational tools, or articles for medical companies. I also tutor nursing and ESL students in writing and nursing sciences. I’m an avid reader (audio books actually) and go through 1-2 books per week. Finally, I love spending time with my sweet husband of 28 years, Scott, and playing with my Yorkie-Poo, Echo.
Stay tuned for next month’s Employee Spotlight to get another close up look at our spectacular team at Bliss Dermatology + Wellness.
