Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a common skin condition, affecting 7.5 to 8 million people living in the United States. Thought to be an autoimmune disease, psoriasis causes inflammation which results in skin cells growing too fast, creating thick, scaly skin patches known as plaques. Although psoriasis plaques may be red and uncomfortable, they are not contagious. Psoriasis can have a negative social and psychological impact, and while there is no known cure, it can be managed with treatment.
Psoriasis is a result of an overactive immune system speeding up skin cell growth. Normal skin cells grow and shed over the course of a month, however with psoriasis, skin cells grow at an accelerated rate in a matter of three or four days. These skin cells pile up and create skin plaques. Plaques and scales can appear on any part of the body. Inflammation caused by psoriasis can also affect body tissue and joints, with some patients developing psoriatic arthritis.
Psoriasis symptoms include:
- Skin plaques
- Itching or burning
- Joint pain
- Joint stiffness
- Inflamed skin
- Ridged, pitted nails
Psoriasis is treated with an individualized treatment plan. Your dermatologist will assess the severity of your condition, and develop a strategy for addressing your specific needs. While there is no cure for psoriasis, treatment can relieve symptoms, improve skin health, and reduce outbreaks. Psoriasis treatments include:
- Topical ointments
- Steroids
- Prescription medication
- Light therapy
One of the important factors of psoriasis treatment is trigger management. Psoriasis triggers vary from person to person, and it is important for patients to understand their triggers and how to avoid them. Common triggers include:
- Stress
- Sunburn
- Illness
- Weather changes
- Certain foods or alcohol
It is recommended for psoriasis patients to keep track of their outbreaks over time in order to determine their triggers. Keeping a log of psoriasis outbreaks and what preceded them is a good method for managing flare-ups. Like many autoimmune diseases, stress exacerbates symptoms, so stress management is incorporated into most psoriasis treatment plans.
