Skin Cancer Treatments
When it comes to treating skin cancer, several effective options are available, tailored to the type, stage, and location of the cancer. Early detection is crucial, as it significantly influences treatment success. For common types like basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), surgical excision is a primary approach. This involves removing the cancerous tissue along with a margin of healthy skin to ensure complete removal.
Mohs surgery is a specialized technique often employed for these cancers, particularly in cosmetically sensitive areas. This method allows for the precise removal of cancerous cells while minimizing damage to surrounding tissues, leading to better cosmetic outcomes and reduced recurrence rates.
For melanoma, treatment options can be more extensive, especially if the cancer has spread. Wide local excision or Staged excision “Slow Mohs” remain the primary approach for early-stage melanoma, while more advanced cases may require additional treatments such as sentinel lymph node therapy, immunotherapy, or chemotherapy.
In cases of melanoma and melanoma in situ where the cancer cells may be particularly difficult to see, the Slow Mohs Surgery technique is appropriate. Slow Mohs is performed in multiple stages, utilizing special staining to provide a detailed examination of each tissue sample. The samples are processed overnight, which allows for enhanced precision in identifying cancer cells. Slow Mohs is also particularly suited for removing skin cancers in delicate areas such as the face and hands, as it allows for the most exact margins and highest levels of healthy skin preservation
Topical treatments, such as creams containing chemotherapy agents, or electrodessication and curettage (ED&C) may be effective for superficial skin cancers, while radiation therapy might be considered if surgery isn’t feasible or if the cancer has returned.
Regular follow-ups with a dermatology provider are essential for monitoring skin health post-treatment. With advances in dermatological care, many skin cancers can be successfully treated, highlighting the importance of early detection and personalized care.
