Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis, commonly known as eczema, is a chronic skin condition characterized by dry, itchy, and inflamed skin. It often begins in childhood but can develop or persist into adulthood, and tends to flare periodically rather than remain constant. Atopic dermatitis is closely linked to a compromised skin barrier, which allows moisture to escape and makes the skin more vulnerable to irritants, allergens, and bacteria.

The condition is often associated with a personal or family history of allergies, asthma, or hay fever, suggesting an underlying immune component. Common triggers include dry weather, harsh soaps or detergents, certain fabrics, stress, and environmental allergens.

Symptoms of Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis commonly appears as dry, scaly patches of skin that are intensely itchy. In young children, it often affects the face, scalp, and outer surfaces of the arms and legs. In older children and adults, it more frequently appears in the creases of the elbows and knees, on the hands, and around the eyes. Scratching can lead to thickened, leathery skin over time, as well as an increased risk of skin infection.

How Atopic Dermatitis Is Treated

Treatment focuses on repairing and protecting the skin barrier while managing inflammation and itch. Daily moisturizing with barrier-repairing creams or ointments is a foundational part of care, along with identifying and minimizing exposure to personal triggers. Topical corticosteroids or other anti-inflammatory medications are often used to calm flares, and in more persistent or severe cases, prescription therapies, including oral or biologic medications, may be recommended. Gentle, fragrance-free skin care products and lukewarm rather than hot showers can also help reduce irritation.

Because atopic dermatitis can vary significantly from person to person, our providers develop an individualized treatment plan based on the severity of symptoms and how the skin responds over time.

With the right care plan, atopic dermatitis can be effectively managed, allowing for longer periods of clear, comfortable skin between flares. If you’re struggling with persistent dryness, itching, or irritation, our providers are here to help you find lasting relief.
