Dermatitis
Dermatitis
Dermatitis is a general term for inflammation of the skin. It can cause redness, itching, dryness, swelling, scaling, or a rash, and may appear anywhere on the body, from the scalp and face to the hands and body folds. Symptoms can range from mild and occasional to persistent and uncomfortable, significantly affecting quality of life when left untreated.
Dermatitis is not a single condition but a broad category that includes several distinct types, each with its own underlying cause, pattern of presentation, and treatment approach. Some forms are chronic and tied to genetics or immune function, while others are triggered by an irritant, allergen, or an overgrowth of naturally occurring yeast on the skin. Because the term covers such a wide range of presentations, an accurate diagnosis is essential to determine the most effective course of treatment.
At Bliss Dermatology + Wellness, our providers evaluate each case individually, taking into account symptoms, skin history, and potential triggers, to identify the underlying cause and recommend a treatment plan suited to your skin and symptoms.
Common Types of Dermatitis
Atopic Dermatitis is a chronic condition commonly known as eczema, linked to a compromised skin barrier, often associated with a family history of similar conditions. It typically causes dry, itchy, inflamed skin.
Seborrheic Dermatitis is a common condition affecting oil-producing areas of the skin, such as the scalp, face, and chest. It is associated with an overgrowth of yeast naturally present on the skin and often presents as flaking, redness, and greasy scale.
Contact Dermatitis
Contact dermatitis occurs when the skin reacts to an irritant or allergen, such as a skin care product, metal, or plant. Symptoms typically appear at the site of contact.
When to See a Dermatologist
Persistent, worsening, or recurring skin irritation should be evaluated by a provider, particularly if over-the-counter treatments haven’t provided relief. A proper diagnosis is important, as different types of dermatitis require different treatment strategies.
How Dermatitis Is Treated
Treatment depends on the type and severity of dermatitis, as well as its underlying cause. Topical treatments, such as medicated creams or ointments, are often used to reduce inflammation and relieve itching, while moisturizers and barrier repair play an important role in restoring and protecting the skin’s natural barrier, particularly for atopic dermatitis. Identifying and avoiding triggers, such as allergens, irritants, or environmental factors, is another key part of managing symptoms. For seborrheic dermatitis, antifungal treatments are often used to address the underlying yeast overgrowth. In more persistent or severe cases, prescription therapies, including topical or oral medications, may be recommended.
Because dermatitis can have multiple causes, an accurate diagnosis is the first step to effective treatment. Our providers evaluate each patient’s skin and history to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.
