Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin condition that affects areas of the body with a higher concentration of oil glands, such as the scalp, face, and chest. It is associated with an overgrowth of a yeast naturally present on the skin, which can trigger inflammation in individuals who are predisposed to the condition. Seborrheic dermatitis tends to be a chronic condition that flares and subsides over time, often influenced by stress, weather changes, or hormonal fluctuations. It can affect people of all ages and skin types, though it is especially common in individuals with oily skin or a family history of the condition. Certain factors, including a weakened immune system, neurological conditions, and colder or drier climates, may also increase the likelihood of developing symptoms or experiencing more frequent flares. In adults, it tends to be a longer-term condition that may require ongoing management.

Symptoms of Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis often presents as flaking or scaling skin, redness, and greasy-looking patches. On the scalp, it can range from mild dandruff to thicker, adherent scale. It may also affect the eyebrows, sides of the nose, ears, and chest, and can be accompanied by itching or irritation.

How Seborrheic Dermatitis Is Treated

Treatment is aimed at reducing yeast overgrowth and calming inflammation. Antifungal shampoos, creams, or washes are commonly used to address the underlying cause, while topical anti-inflammatory medications can help relieve redness and irritation during flares. Regular use of gentle, medicated cleansers is often recommended to help manage symptoms over the long term. Because seborrheic dermatitis is a recurring condition, ongoing maintenance care is typically more effective than one-time treatment.

Our providers can help determine the most effective combination of treatments for your skin and develop a plan to manage flares as they occur. With a consistent, medically-guided routine, most patients see significant improvement in both symptoms and confidence in their skin.
