Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is an ideal option for those looking for a long-lasting alternative to temporary and often uncomfortable hair removal methods like shaving, waxing, plucking, sugaring, depilatories, epilators, or electrolysis. With modern advances in laser technology, dermatologists can safely and effectively target unwanted body hair. Multiple treatments are necessary for optimal results because hair grows in cycles, and the laser can only effectively treat hairs in their active growth phase. Treatments are typically spaced about four weeks apart, and annual maintenance sessions are recommended to maintain smooth, hair-free skin.
Laser hair removal is the most effective for individuals with dark hair and light skin, as the laser targets the pigment, or melanin, in the hair. Melanin gives hair its color, allowing the laser to selectively remove it. However, newer laser technologies can safely and effectively treat unwanted hair across all skin tones and even lighter hair colors.
How Laser Hair Removal Works
Before your treatments, the area to be treated will be cleaned and, if desired, numbed with a topical anesthetic, which may take 30 minutes or more to take effect. Protective eye gear is provided to ensure safety during the procedure. A handheld laser device is then applied to the skin, delivering precise pulses of energy. You may feel sensations similar to a quick snap of a rubber band or gentle pinpricks as the laser targets the hair follicles.
What to Expect After Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment
Following your treatment, the targeted hair will typically shed within 10–14 days. Gentle exfoliation of the area around 10 days post-treatment can help speed up this process. Your skin may be sensitive afterward, so it is important to protect it from sun exposure. Temporary redness and swelling in the treated area are normal and should subside shortly.
After completing the recommended series of treatments, you can expect up to 90% reduction in hair growth, with smooth, hair-free skin lasting for several months. Some hair may eventually regrow, but it typically appears lighter, finer, and sparser than before, making maintenance easier.
