Hair Loss

Hair loss is a common condition affecting both men and women. Over time, hair follicles shrink and eventually stop growing hair. As your hair naturally sheds, this leads to a decrease in hair density. The first signs of hair loss usually include overall thinning, widening part, receding hairline, or bald spots. From genetic factors to medical conditions, understanding the root causes is crucial in addressing this issue effectively.

Hair loss refers to the partial or complete loss of hair, most commonly affecting the scalp. It can be caused by hereditary conditions, stress, natural aging, or autoimmune disease. As you age, your hair growth naturally slows down. In other cases, your body can halt your hair production in response to internal or external stress factors. Another common trigger for hair loss is autoimmune disorders, as your body mistakenly attacks the hair follicles.

Female pattern hair loss is the most common type of hair loss for women. It is a gradual hair thinning that begins in a woman’s 40s and 50s, around the time of menopause. You may notice a widening part and your hair thinning around your temples. It can be treated with hair growth supplements, topical treatments such as minoxidil and oral medications that stimulate hair regrowth. You will see the best results by starting treatment as soon as you notice hair loss.

Male pattern hair loss is the most common type of hair loss in men. It can begin as early as the late teens or 20s. Hair loss begins as a receding hairline and thinning at the top of the head. Treatment options include hair growth supplements, topical treatments such as minoxidil and oral medications such as finasteride that stimulate hair regrowth. Alternative options include at home light devices, PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injections and hair transplantation. Men who start treatment when they first start noticing hair loss will see the best results.

Alopecia areata is a type of autoimmune disease that causes sudden hair loss. This hair loss is primarily on the scalp, but can affect any area on the body. The three main types are: patchy, alopecia totalis, and alopecia universalis. The severity of these subtypes ranges from patchy hair loss to total hair loss on the scalp or body. Alopecia areata affects 7 million people in the United States.

Rough handling

Brushing your hair too harshly or tying it up in restrictive styles can also contribute to hair loss. Patients should gently brush their hair from the ends up in order to maintain the health of their hair. Wearing tight updos pulls at the hairline, creating damage over time. It is recommended to wear your hair down or tied back loosely in order to prevent breakage.

Improper Hair Care

Excessive styling can also contribute to hair loss. Bleaching or dyeing your hair and using perms or relaxers creates damage that can cause hair loss and breakage over time. Color treating your hair sparingly and avoiding heat tools can help mitigate the signs of hair damage.

Childbirth, Illness, and Other Stressors

You may find after giving birth or recovering from an operation your hair begins to fall out. This is caused by the physical stress your body is under. Emotional stressors can also cause hair loss, such as big life changes or anxiety. In these cases hair typically begins to regrow with time.

While your hair may begin to regrow on its own, it is important to visit your dermatologist so they can recommend personalized treatments for your skin and hair. Your dermatologist has the necessary medical knowledge for you to achieve real, lasting results. Hair loss treatments should be custom and cover a range of approaches based on the underlying causes and patient preferences.

Treatments include:

  • Hair growth supplements
  • Topical and oral Minoxidil
  • Topical and oral Finasteride
  • Microneedling with PRP
  • Prescription medication

Customizing treatment plans based on individual needs and the specific type of hair loss is essential for achieving optimal results and patient satisfaction. Make sure you consult with your dermatologist to set up the best treatment plan for you.
